Start From the Top. Since roots need the most color (and processing time), apply dye there first, then comb through the rest of hair to distribute it — you'll avoid the dreaded two-tone effect. And work in four to six sections, like pros do in the salon, to ensure full coverage.

If you have thick hair, I don't suggest cutting more than a few inches because I have really thick hair and cut it so it touches the shoulder with the tips and it was a disaster everyday because it would puff out and because it hit the shoulder directly, that caused the ends on ONE side to flare out versus in, which is incredibly annoying. you said you wanted to be a more natural color so I think a chestnut brown would look nice :)
