Whenever I put primer on before foundation, I tend to break out--usually painful bumps under the skin. I've used smashbox and Benefit pore-fessional, and both clog my pores! I get better results with no primer at all. does anyone know of good primers that won't break me out?

It really depends on the person what would break them out.
It could be that you have a sensitivity to silicones or any number of reasons those primers caused you to break out.
Honestly, primer isn't all that necessary unless you're trying to make your skin look smoother or if you have oily skin.
If you're on the dry side, a good moisturizer should get the job done since most primers geared toward dry skin just work by allowing your foundation to "glide on" and "creates a barrier between your skin and makeup helping it last longer"
But most moisturizers with have some type of emollient that same type of layer, they also help your makeup glide on/apply more smoothly.
If you get better results without a primer than just skip it. It's not necessary for everyone's skin type
