Setting spray or powder.

Are you unsure of which one to use? Personally I use both to set my makeup and I know a lot of people do as well.

I use both also.
Powder sets your foundation so any powder products like blush, bronzer etc. you apply after won't go on patchy. It can also smooth out the surface of your skIn and blur pores and of course matte out your skin. It will also extend the wear of your foundation. But, if you're not careful, it can make you look dry, powdery, cakey and accentuate lines and wrinkles. Setting spray will also extend the wear of your makeup and some formulas can mattify while others can leave a dewy finish. Some formulas can moisterize your skin, but unlike powder, it can't really smooth out your skin as far as pores and textured skin. it can correct an overly powdered face. If you wear foundation, I personally think you need a setting powder even if it's the tiniest veil. But setting spray is optional or can be used IF you feel you need it.

Do you mean setting sprays like UD All Nighter? I don't recommend those for daily use as they're loaded with irritating alcohol.

I love to use a light touch of the Rimmel stay matte powder then Mac fix+ and/or urban decay chill spray. The powder sets the liquid makeup beneath it, but the spray gets rid of the cakey and powdery look.
