I had knee surgery a few months ago and lost all my muscle in my leg. The doctors said if I don't get the muscle back I have to wear my brace for a long time. But every exercise the people at physical therapy tell me to do, see not to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on great leg workouts

Stick with what the p/t folks tell you. You aren't going to see results right away. The last thing you want to do is strain yourself and do even further damage. Follow their instructions to a T and don't stray from it.

Something I used to do was: lay on your side with a 5 pound weight. With the legs slightly bent, raise the leg closest to the ceiling. With the weight about mid thigh. Lift it about 45 degrees and back down. 50 on each leg

Definitely listen to your physical therapist and do what they say. They know what they're doing and you don't want to re-injure your knee. I've spent the last 3 months in PT after a knee injury while training for a half marathon. PT is usually a slow process and requires a lot of patience!
