Oscar Beauty 2011: Hailee Steinfeld
Published Feb 28, 2011
Hailee Steinfeld, “Best Supporting Actress” nominee for “True Grit,” looked perfectly elegant and age appropriate for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet. She opted for an elegant updoand refined and understated makeup to go with her whimsical powder pink Marchesa dress. Hairstylist Jenny Cho took inspiration from Steinfeld’s outfit: “I was so inspired by her pale pink Marchesa dress and the dripping beads. I wanted to create a hairstyle that was a cross between Audrey Hepburn and a ballerina.” says Cho.
Makeup Artist Stephen Sollitto was inspired by a pink eye shadow when creating Steinfeld’s look: “Hailee’s whole look was inspired by one pale pink shade of shadow in Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes. The word ‘ballerina’ came to my mind when I saw this shade and thought how poised, feminine, young, soft, and yet strong Hailee was, like a ballerina! When I arrived on Oscar day, she had a pale pink Marchesa dress and my ballerina inspiration came to life. It was our word for our look for the day.” Keep reading to see Bullock’s full beauty breakdown and hair how-to tips from the 2011 Oscars.
Makeup artist Stephen Sollitto started Hailee’s face by moisturizing with Chanel Beaute Initiale Energizing Multi Protection Cream. He let that sit for a minute then applied Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Skin Perfecting Foundation in Beige-Tendre all over with a damp sponge.
On Hailee’s cheeks Stephen used two different colors. First, he started with Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Espiegle in the hollows of her cheek bone. Then on top of that I layered Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect in Tweed Pink. I dragged this from her apples very lightly to almost her nose just for some continued color.
Next, Stephen worked on Hailee’s eyes with a veil of Chanel Professional Eyeshadow Base in Beige all over her lid. At the lash line only, he used Chanel Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Cassis. He went over this line to blend it out and soften its edges with the deep plum shade in Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Kaska Beige. To off set the pink and deep plum and to pop the gold in her eyes underneath the bottom lashes he used the gold in the same palette. Stephen used a pliable brush to apply so the line was full under her lashes for some definition yet a softness to her eye. Then he topped off her lashes with Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir.
Stephen applied Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lip Colour in Fetiche (available in April) on Hailee’s lips, dotting on a bit of Chanel Glossimer in Rose Dilemma “just for an extra pop of shine in the center of her bottom lip.”
“Pulling Hailee’s hair up really showed off her neck and having the hair show from the front gave the illusion of elongating her like a ballerina. The headband made the look young and age appropriate,” says Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist, Jenny Cho. Follow these tips to make this look your own:
Layer Suave Professionals Heat Protection Spray(to protect hair from heat) and Suave Professionals Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream to damp hair and blow dry with a Mason Pearson brush to smooth hair and help fight any unwanted frizz and flyways.
Make a high ponytail using a brush to smooth as you go.
Spit the ponytail into two. Spray Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray to the two sections and tie a knot as if you’re making a bow. Keep knotting until you run out of hair. Secure with bobby pins and “U” shaped pins.
Spray hairspray to a toothbrush and brush back any flyaways to define and polish the look. Mist entire look with hairspray and spritz Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Spray to finish the look.
For an added bit of glam, add a glittery headband.
