Does this particular hairdo require the part to be down the middle or to the side? Does it matter? Also, if my hair is layered, will it work?

the parting really doesn't matter, most of your hair will be pulled straight back anyways. Layered hair will work as long as most of the pieces are long enough to be worked into the knots, otherwise it may get messy. If you do have very short layers, just work in a wax before you tie the knots and then hairspray to set and everything should stay pretty clean :)

This is a super elegant up-do that looks a lot more intricate and difficult to recreate than it actually is. It's perfect for semi-formals, proms, maybe even a wedding. I chose to leave it bare as I found the knots added enough definition and texture already but you can easily spruce it up by adding an accessory here or there.
