I really love the idea and affect that you have on your nails. :)
I've done this too, but with a really light blue and a darker blue to get an acid wash jeans affect to my nails. Instead of getting the polish all over your hands, paint the gold underneath and black on top (at least let it dry 80%). Use some nail polish remover and gently swipe at it until only a bit of the top layer is uncovered. Gives the same affect and is mess-free! :)

I find that crackles aren't always reliable at crackling the way you want them too. :)
