Some are that like clothy kind of material. I prefer rubber, I feel like I get a cleaner application.

It depends on what I am going for. If I am going for long lashes I will do rubber, if I am going for volume I will do bristles.
Sometimes I just do them both!

I don't like rubber because I end up poking my eyeball every time with those dern things!

Traditional brushes are actually made out of synthetic fibers so you were right flor. These bristly hairs are good for volume especially when there are a lot of bristles on the wand.
Plastic brushes are good for separation or length but are not your best bet for voluminous lashes
Rubber-bristled wands are good for no clumps and lots of volume! Mascara actually will avoid drying up as fast on rubber because it slips off easier
