Hello all,

I just wanted to know your opinions on gel polish.
I'm contemplating getting my nails done but they are pretty long and I don't want to ruin them, I know they use acetone to take it off but that's about ask I know. Lol.
What are your experiences with it and what's a good price?
Thanks in advance! ;)

I adore gel nails. Sigh. I wish I could get them all the time but they are a bit expensive and do damage your nails. The process is much longer than a regular manicure as the ladies will paint a coat of polish and top coat and put it under a lamp about three times. I love gel nails because they last much, much longer and are super shiny. After it's done your nails are also immediately dry so you don't have to be careful about ruining them. Taking off the polish is the trouble. You can get it done at the salon and they soak them in acetone and cover them in foil. Your nails will feel much thinner and bit flimsy, but it isn't anywhere as bad as your nails after acrylics. I just put on a strengthening top coat for a week and my nails will be pretty much fine. I usually pay about $30-40 for gel but it really depends on the place. I wouldn't pay under about $20 or I don't think it would be legit. Good luck!

I would call the salon first and ask if they remove the gel with acetone or gel nail remover. I would only remove my gels with the special remover that goes with the brand of gel. I used to just use acetone but it noticeably left my nails weaker. When I use the special remover my nails are perfect after and the gel comes off quicker. I've been wearing gel for a year and I love it!! I love gelish. I just bought all the stuff myself and do it.

Thanks ladies. :)
I've done some research and still feel iffy about it. Just wanted real world input/opinions.
I'm just afraid of ruining my long nails! Lol.

I've been getting gel nails for about 2 years after having acrylics. My nails have never been stronger. The issue is who you get to do your nails and if they are using the correct top and base coat. When they try to save money they use these cheap ones that may last a little longer but the polish doesn't easily flake off when you wrap them so they end up scraping your nails. I've been to at least 6 places who do it poorly but am glad I have a salon that does it right. It's a little more expensive but worth it.

In my work place we wrap to nails in half a cotton pad with acetone and then we use pieces of foil to secure it, we leave it for 10 minutes and then we scrape and buff the nails. I would advise you on using a nail strengthening clear coat of nail varnish after having gelish :)

Acetone weakens the crap out of your nails. From experience.
