Is it bad to pop pimples? And why?

Yes it is. It breaks the skin which causes scarring and it can also lead to infection.

You can get acne scars from poping your pimples , before they are ready, if you can look at the pimple and see a white head at the surface , which means the sebum has come close enough to the surface to be extracted without much effort then you can take two tissues and wrap them around your fingers and give a gentle push and the sebum should come right out ,trying to pop a pimple before it's come to the surface will do nothing but cause pigmentation problems with your skin it's better to just spot treat it till it's ready or dries up or just goes away on its own,I do not advise trying to lance your pimples yourself it should be done by a professional and usually only done on cystic ance ,after your pimple has popped put a tiny bit of neosporin to keep it from scarring or getting infected

I agree with Traci completely.
Most people don't know what they're doing when they pop a pimple, yes you may have the tools but that's it. People tend to apply pressure incorrectly.. it takes professionals time to learn how to correctly apply pressure and how to correctly extract a pimple. Sometimes even years.

Traci and Kitty are spot on. (no pun intended there lol) I only pop them if they are near the surface. Anything that is big or painful is not ready to be popped and even though it feels awful and like it should be popped, it isn't going to pop and it will just lead to scarring and it will take longer to heal. Use a spot treatment, ice it or use a warm compress to help with discomfort but don't try to force it to pop. The bump you're feeling is most likely inflammation/swelling and the actual sebum is down deeper. Also, it should go without saying that you should never take a needle to your skin. If it gets to that point you need to go to a professional and have them take care of it.

God I love threads like this. I think my true calling is in dermatology. This sort of stuff fascinates me.

^^ Me too. I've honestly thought about going back to school to become a medical esthetician. I would go for full on dermatologist but I don't know if I could afford the schooling for it. I don't know how long it takes, my derm doesn't look much older than me at all lol. Either she really is young or she's a really damn good dermatologist because she looks soo young haha.
