Have you tried the Seche Clear basecoat? It's great, very smooth and easy to apply, and you don't need a lot.

I use Sally Hansen (I think it's called Two Faced or Double Trouble or something. It's a base and top coat. Also, it has a blue cap if that helps lol!!
