My nails are dry and cracked and in general very unhealthy looking. Is there something wrong? How do I fix it?

What do you do to them? Like do you put nail polish or do you bite them?

This can be cause from sicknesses such as thyroid disease. Don't be worries, this is easily managed with medicine! It's nothing serious. However it can be simply that you're not eating right or getting enough vitamins. Eat fetus and vegetables daily, drink plenty of water, and take fish oils and other vitamins. Clip your nails, file in only one direction to prevent tearing, and apply a strengthener or nail hardener! I have the same problem, but no sickness ( I use Sally nails nail hardener ). Every night remove the nail hardener / strengthener / lengthener with a nurturing remover and apply a new coat, or simply apply a new coat over the first ( especially if your nails are painted. ) apply hand lotions and cuticle creams! If this doesn't help consult a doctor.

Haha. And you don't need to speak with a doctor about vitamins, they are very safe and prescription free 😊 just do research! You can even ask pharmacists about what vitamins would help you.

You do have to talk to your doctor. taking too much vitamins that you don't need can cause an overdose such as iron. you need blood work done to find out if you have any deficiencies.

I'm talking about fish oils and daily vitamins for women or teens. Fish oils is just the same as eating fish..

Anemia maybe (low in iron count) most women have it (I do), its no biggie just ask your doctor for a blood test and then if you do have it all you have to take are iron pills! Other symptoms are easily bruising, "craving" to chew on ice (I do) or plastic, getting lightheaded a lot/out of breath, pale skin.

Drinking more water really helped me, and when they get longer, cut off the end which has split- your nail should carry on growing as normal. This worked for me, however like the others have said you may have a deficiency. Drinking a bit more water never does any harm in any case.

I don't bite my nails but I do wear a lot of nail polish (think 6 days a week). I think its from me picking them off but I'm not sure!

Thanks guys <3

If you pick at them, then yes. Cause that happened to my nails once and I just let them grow out and stopped picking at them. And I agree with Ella. Drink lots of water. There's no limit to water :)

A couple points I would like to make on here is that just because something does not have to be prescribed doesn't necessarily mean it safe. Excess vitamins can harm you so... Please consult with a doctor if you are concerned about any form of deficiency. I really wish moderators would kind of harp on people for giving medical advice.

Something's that we consider harmless may actually be harmful to others. Example telling someone to drink more water can cause contribution of increased blood pressure or fluid overload especially in people who don't have powerful kidneys or CHF.
