Hello, there!

I work in the medical field as an opthalmic technician. We don't do as much touching of patients as other types of medical technicians, but following Universe Precautions means that we still do a lot of hand-washing and/or using sanitizing gel during exams and between patients. After all, the last thing you'd want to do is spread a nasty eye infection from one person to another--or yourself.

Since I started this job about 5 years ago, I've notice that my nails seem to be more brittle than they were before. I'm guessing that this is probably due to all the hand-washing, etc. When I'm at home, I moisturize as much as possible and I always use a hand cream with SPF before I step outside, but I can't really moisturize while I'm at work due to potential contamination issues.

Is there anything else/more that you would recommend I try? I do apply regular nail polish about once a week, but it usually wears off about three days into my work week.

I need the answer to this question as well. I'm an RN and my poor lil nails are pathetic. Almost embarrassing to show. I've tried countless products with no luck.

Working with walking petrie dishes (kids), I'm always drowning in hand sanitizer as we can't always leave to use the powder room. I notice a huge difference during vacation vs. work. I use a strengthening base coat, a cuticle serum and a good quality topcoat. I'm loving Julep's cuticle serum and topcoat. I slather my hands in hand cream whenever possible and sometimes use a thick foot creme on them before bed. Whenever possible I wear gloved cotton or rubber depending on the task.
