Do lightening shampoos work?

So I was at the grocery store today looking at shampoo. They had a shampoo that says it lightens your hair, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried it and if it works.

I would be careful they may dry your hair out.

I tried the John Frieda one and it did nothing for my hair. I was in the process of bleaching my hair and even at a lighter color it didn't do squat.
