My close friend always asks me to do her makeup for special events such as PROM. But her eye lid has absolutely NO work space because she has a deep set, hooded eye.
She wants a red lip and I feel like the easiest way to go soul be simple warm tones for eye shadow but she wants more options. Give me ideas?

One girl in my school makes her hooded eye work like sort of an Asian eye. Keep the liner close to the lash line, and bring the shadows higher so create a higher crease line, and you can add color in the inner corner or bottom lashline.

I agree with sapphire and what I learned in beauty school was to leave the eye open have the client look straight and contour where there eye opens if they have hooded that way the color shows even when open because thats the main problem with hooded eyes. Once their open you can't see the color.

Just a note... That pictorial above is NOT a hooded eye. :) I have hooded eyes and what I have found helpful are following some of the following suggestions (no rules here!) :

Use matte colors on hooded eyes, it helps to not make the eyelids come more forward than what they already are.

Really make the eyebrows pop. If they can help lift the eye, take advantage of that.

Don't be afraid to bring the color on the lid above the natural crease as it is very low on a hooded eye. Use the brow bone as more of a guide as to how far to pull color up on the eye.

Don't be afraid to use a little color underneath the eye. For example, my eyes look great when I add a line of deep purple or Navy blue on top of my eyeliner rimming the eye on the outter three quarters of the top and bottom lash line.

To make a wing, start at the lower lash and start your flick from there by following the curve of the lower lash line Up and out. You can then fill it in to make it look right for the top.

Blend blend blend.

Use a primer. Hooded eyes still blink closed and a crease in eyeshadow looks horrid usually.

There are plenty of other tips, but these are ones I follow a lot.

There are plenty of tutorials out there for this - try looking on YouTube for hooded eye shadow techniques - you need blend above the crease line and do her makeup with her eyes open to ensure you can see the shadow when she opens her eyes.

I completely agree with amy. I have hooded eyes. You cannot see any of my lid when my eyes are open. I use matte shades only for the most part and will line my lower lashline with some color. But I don't line the entire line so I don't make my eyes look smaller. I also line my bottom water line with a white liner to open them up. Also lashes lashes lashes. Cannot say enough about curling and mascara. I learned a lot on youtube. also blend blend blend above the crease.

Jure Chuk has some really helpful videos on YouTube. He's helpede the most. I'm off to check out missmai27. Also check out Megan McTaggart, search for IT naturally pretty palette and she does a look for hooded eyes. I have deepset/hooded eyes and all you can see on me is my eyelashes and browbone...very frustrating!

Its's tricky to do eye makeup with hooded eyes. I use highlighter on the inner corners and brow bone area. I disagree that matte colors look better and think you can really go with either matte or shimmer. I always use natural colors like the naked palettes. I always line my upper lids, but rarely on the lower lash line. I definitely bring the color up more on the lid so it shows, but make sure it blends from darkest on the lid to just highlighted on the brow bone. I also bring the color to almost a v shape above the outer corner. Hard to explain. I only use three colors: a highlighter color, a base color and then a darker color for outer corner. Definitely make the lashes as long as possible. I don't love the fact that I have hooded eyes, but at 32 I've finally gotten into the hang of doing them and even get compliments on my eye make up LOL.

I just wanted to say that the picture bryanna posted is a very hooded eye, look at the first picture, you can't see any of her lid. She creates a fake crease, and highlights the "fold" of her hooded eyes to make it seem like a normal eyelid. Her eyeliner on where the fold is and where the kid meets. You could do that, or I'd suggest looking up Sharon ferall (sp?) on YouTube, she has hooded eyes too and does great looks.

Good thing catching that Amy!:) ^

Dani I recommend talking to one of the mods. Alma and Jackie will tell you exactly what you can and shouldn't do for this specific eye shape. Or if you like I can locate you some helpful articles and give you some info.

I have deep set eyes, almost hooded with zero space between lashes and eyebrow. I understand what you are going through...
