Roc retinol is the best drugstore retinol it has the highest amount that you will find in a drugstore,

And Retin A is prescribed by your derm it's strong and can cause skin sensitivity and irritation and you have to work your way up to using it that's if your skin can tolerate it

You're going to need a hydrating face wash (such as CeraVe) and killer moisturizer to pair it with to counter the dryness. Aminos, peptides and ceramides...those are also highly effective if you are using it for anti-aging purposes. I'd also pair it with a Vitamin C serum, a weekly exfoliating product and an SPF of at least 30. I'd avoid products with AHA in it if you are using Retinol as well. Test patch and slow introduction of Retinol is also my personal suggestion.

Ahhh Traci beat me to it. ;) Did you have specific areas of concern or were you looking to use it as an overall treatment?

Thanks! General wrinkle prevention. I just ordered vit c serum from Traci's recommendation so it's on the way! I'll start with roc.. You guys are the best!

Yay! You should see some great results with Retinol if you are patient and diligent. When I started using C...I could see my skin brightening week by week and got my glow back. Whew! I know it's cliche', but prevention really is the best cure. Keep us posted on how you like it! :)

I use Roc Retinol every other day...some days I completely skip but I've never encountered crazy drying out of the skin. My formula actually contains an AHA but I definitely wouldn't apply an AHA moisturizer over it. I do rotate with an AHA moisturizer on the days I'm not using the retinol. Its perfectly fine if you follow a similar program. As with anything...proceeding in baby steps in vital for a positive experience. And when using the retinol a pea size amount should take care of the entire face and apply in sections.

Great to know, Shelley! I used a moisturizer with AHA while using Retinol and learned that my sensitive skin just cannot take it. ( I use a script from my derm.) Now, I am issue free and slathered in SPF!

Sometimes you have to wait till the retinol is totally penetrated into your skin before using a Aha or it will cause a heating up reaction on your skin and irritate it if you wait about 15 min you may not have a issue with it.

I use retinol, vit c serum, & another Vit C w/ahas. And I can't use the retinol & the ahas on the same night. It will cause a minor facial burn. It will turn red & the skin will raise up into a scabby welt. It heals fine with no additional discoloration but its a pain in the ass. And I don't have sensitive skin.

I use either prescription retin-A 1.0 % or Skinceuticals Retinol 1.0. Although if you've never used a retinol before you may want to consider using a lower potency one to get your skin acclimated to it. Dr.s will often start a patient off with a lower potency a couple times a week & work you up to more often for awhile then a higher potency. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Aging Retinol Treatment is a good one to start with. Most reputable retinols are packaged in metal tubes. Like the Neutrogena one I recommended or the ROC one someone else recommended. Always do a patch test. I know when you want something, you want it fast. But consider starting slow, if you start with a too high potency you might not like the initial skin reaction you get & may get discouraged and blame the product.

Is it just me or is the phrase "over the counter" totally backwards?

I picked up the CeraVe AM moisturizer with SPF, based on Traci's recommendations. It works like a charm and plays well with my CC cream. So, I totally worship Traci and would try out any of her recommendations.
