From what I've learned bronzer can be used 2 ways. 1 is obviously to look bronzed so you would put it where the sun naturally hits you (cheekbones, temples, and down the jaw line) you apply it in a 3 shape. 2nd you can use a matte bronzer to contour so you would do the 3 formation but focus more b the hollows on the cheek bones. there are tons of tutorials on YouTube!

In all honesty a lot of bronzes are made to contour with now a days because companies know people will do it anyways. Plus if you like contouring with a bronzed and like the look I say absolutely go for it (just don't tell the beautylish community or they'll castrate you)

I've never heard of contouring with a "grayish shade" I have multiple graduate makeup artist in my family and they all say to contour with a matte brown shade suitable for your skintone.

Oh I've seen some people go pretty insane on this topic. Someone will confirm they understand the "rules" and still prefer their way but the other person won't have it. It's happened multiple times. I personally like contouring with my hoola bronzer during the summer because it looks better with my tanned skin, in the winter when I'm much paler I do use the Kevyn aucoin sculpting powder but I don't like it at all for summer. While there are beauty guide lines (and thank god for them) thats what they are, guide lines. I just feel so many people claim that makeup is an artistic expression and then stick to the norm. It's absolutely 100% do what you feel. That's the only reason I mention that you can contour with bronzer (on your own accord) because you know what, it's a look many people do enjoy and should absolute try before they knock it because the rule book said no

That was much longer than I anticipated

Though if I might add I laughed a little at the fact that beautylish just wrote an article about bronzers and how to achieve a contoured look, it was a bit ironic!

I've seen far too many scary looks on YouTube of beauties using bronzer as a contour. I used to do it too till I got over my fear and contoured using a product exclusively made for such a look. What a huge difference it made. Everyone is different and what works for one might not work for another but I cringe when I see an obvious brown/or orange stripes on a person's face.

Alexis is right about the grayish shade. She's not saying you use a gray color. Instead that the brown you use is cool in color as opposed to warm.

Anyhoo, bronzer is used to give you a sun kissed look. Basically you can use it like you would a highlighter: high points of cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead and chin.

Bronzer can be used to highlight, bronze, or contour the face depending on the shade & the finish. There are plenty of bronzer a on the market designed for each purpose. I own 4 products that are perfect for contouring and they all have the word " bronzer" in the name. I'm a professional makeup artist, & my best advice about makeup is, there are no "Rules". It's an art, have fun and do whatever you like and whatever works for you! Putting rules and rights & wrongs on the art just breaks my heart.

Nooooo, not under the cheekbones! That would be contouring with bronzer. ON the cheekbones, where the sun would give you a little color naturally.
