I would go for colors that you know you'll need the most depending on your area. For example I live in an area where there are more hispanics so therefore I need shades like 123, 127, etc. As far as setting powder, you can use a translucent one, like cover fx or laura mercier, mainly because they don't add any color, but still add that finishing touch and set the make up. Powder is best for combination to oily skin types.

I love 117 for light skins, (cough cough see pasty me!) 123 is their number one seller and works on so many skins, love it in my kit! Also, the original Flash Palette is great to throw a little dark color into a foundation to make what you need. I find using a primer that works with the clients skin type helps foundations to fit many faces much better. Korres makes great ones for oily skin, and have a great pomegranate option with no silicone- a very important option for allergies, or using many foundations that don't play well with silicones. I love the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish NaturL powders, Ben Nye's powders, and DermaFinish setting powder used sparingly or mixed with others is the most long wearing thing I've ever found! Good luck!!
