I wasn't entirely sure what topic to put this in, so I figured I'd just choose makeup because that's what this topic is about.

I don't know if you would call this a debate, but I was just wondering what you guys thought on people telling you what's "right" and "wrong" in the makeup world. I mean no disrespect when I say this, but I just find it kind of interesting when on some threads some ladies will get upset when someone calls a look a smokey eye that isn't technically a smokey eye. And I'm also kind of confused on the whole no using bronzer to contour thing. I understand that it's meant to warm up your face and not necessarily meant to create shadows on your face, but hundreds of beauty professionals who have gone to beauty school and studied the art of makeup have used this method of contouring with bronzer. Is there a right or wrong in the makeup world? And what does it matter if someone is going a little outside of the box when it comes to Doing their makeup look. I myself enjoy finding as many used out of my products as I can, whether it's using my bronzer in my crease, using it to contour, using lipstick as a blush. What do you ladies think of this?

There is no rights in wrong, it's personal preference really...but a technique is a technique. If someone wants to be taught, it's better to teach them the right way. right?

People take things to personally I guess, whereas others like to prove their points. I mean, I understand that they want people to learn the correct way, but in my mind it's makeup. The way you do you're makeup, is the way you do you're makeup. And you're enabled to call something whatever you want to call it. There will always be people to tell you right from wrong, some people care too much. But, makeup could be a beings job, as a professional, they know what is what. From an MUA I would take it as advice.

I think everyone has their own tips and tricks and opinions. I love hearing people talk out their "differences". I am more open then some people on here.:)

I'm not a professional but I really think it depends on the persons face, and since we are all different in some way, I would say there's no ultimate right or wrong, there's just general "rules" of applying makeup. Take an athlete for example, there are so many talented, good athletes, however they all have different style and have different things that they have to do in order to be a good player. Yet some of the athletes may play the same "game" they all have an individual style of how they play. I don't know if that made any sense...but it was the only analogy I could think of 😁

Everyone can do whatever they want with makeup, that's the beauty of it, but when people are putting the defined name of a certain look on something completely different, it's misinformation. There are defined proper techniques, and you don't have to follow them to the T, but don't say it's something it isn't.

@Renay I agree it's best to teach people the right way, I guess what I'm saying more is it's interesting how some people think something is right when I just don't really believe in right and wrong in makeup. I completely agree with you @Vallerie

Well there is right & wrong.. that's why people go to school for it to learn the proper technique. sure people can do whatever they want with makeup, I don't care. but there is a right/proper way to do things. just like in art. people create whatever they want, think outside of the box, but still use proper techniques to create it. I can't do what they do because I don't know the right way to shade or any of that. so yes, I do believe there is a right way, but people can do whatever pleases them.

Interesting topic.I will say that this is when the languages get crossed between a Makeup Artist & a Makeup enthusiast..See a MUA see's things differently because our business is makeup and guidelines and proper techniques is what brings the business and skill. What may not be interesting or may seem useless to a everyday person is important to us, we see or notice things like placement, angles, structure,Color display ,application on a face that maybe no one else will.If you choose to take any advise that's truly on you but other's need to really be aware who is giving you this feed back are they MUA's are they true makeup enthusiast that have tried a technique or products or are they just people that want to be heard for the sake of likes here. People getting crazy trying to correct a technique here on BL getting very Cookie monster face over it is a bit silly and to be honest those who do that they just plain out want to be heard or notice because they learned that here themselves MOST of the time when you asked them to explain why or how they can't answer it OR you'll notice they all answer but they repeat the same explanation word for word (WHY IS THAT you say) Well it's because that is what they could soak up from here and most of the time they truly don't no or have ever tried that technique or product. The best way to know who is genuine and who is not just read the response to a comment. One more thing Look Makeup is Art but lets get real even Artist have to sell Paintings always continue to want to learn or you'll always sit stale...;) I'm old school READ! STOP the YOUTUBE they all watch each others video's enough said hench why youtube face or instagram face highlight and poop streak cheeks have taken over LOL j/k but just have fun.

I think you should do what you want with your makeup. But if someone asks how to contour...I would tell them to use a cool toned product because if you don't...it's not contouring. Some things in makeup are preference and some are techniques. Sorry...I'm kinda confusing.

I think for everyday makeup or special events, like how beauty you tubers do tutorials for, you are open to do whatever you want... If you like it, if you can make it look good (despite what people say is right or wrong), it is fine for you to do it. People will follow the techniques they have seen or have liked and that's fine

It's a personal thing like what they've always done and what you've always done are different techniques, but that doesn't mean you're right and they're wrong or that they're right and you're wrong, it's just perspective.
