Would you trust your hair with a beauty student?

I want to get balayage highlights done in my hair, but I don't want to pay that much. This girl at an Aveda Hair Institute offers it for like $40. So I'm thinking about whether I should trust my hair with a beauty student. Would you?

Considering balayage ombré just recently got famous, I wouldn't trust a student at all with my hair. Balayage is a complicated technique a student most likely does not have a lot of experience with it.

I think it depends. If the training is good, there shouldn't be a problem. A lot of it has to do with having a natural feel for it & listening to the client.
I would personally be a bit wary of trusting a student with cutting my hair, but for colouring, you can always just box dye it close to your natural colour again if it goes horribly wrong! I say give it a go.

This really depends on the individual.
I would ask her for photos or a portfolio, and how many clients she has performed it on, if it's going to be supervised or if you can request supervision, etc. I understand that you are looking for a cheaper alternative but you have to keep in mind that sometimes cheap things turn out expensive.

Aveda is amazing and I've been trained in some of their techniques. Balayage in my honest opinion isn't that hard - and that's coming from a second month apprentice.

Depends on where you go. ask to see her work first. when I lived in Omaha I always got my hair done at a place called Xenon (stylists were students) & I always loved it. then I moved to Kansas city & had the worst experience ever at a place with students. my mom's "manicure" looked like my brothers did it. so it definitely depends on the place &person.

I used to go to a school to have my hair colored and cut (a friend recommended it I have always been untrusting with my locks) but I gave it a shot and my favorite hair cut was done there by a student. I say don't sell those gals/guys short. only reason I don't go there now is I have moved.

I got my hair done by a student once and it turned out great, they haw a lot of practice and usually an instructor paying attention to the work they're doing

My friend is a beauty student and she's been in school for 2 years. She does good dye jobs but she says she wouldn't do an ombré and baylage until she's in year 3. It's just very complicated techniques and since she said she wouldn't do it; I wouldn't trust a beauty student.

I have actually had my hair done by a beauty student and it turned out amazing. I think it depends on how long they have done hair but my student was new and she did just as good of a job.

Honestly I think it depends on the person, I've had my hair done by people who have been doing it for thirty years but they have never improved; and I've had it done by people who have only been doing it for a couple of years and they are great! Just because someone has been doing something for years doesn't mean they do it well. You've either got it or you don't, it just depends on the person. Aveda has a great training program and their stylist are great, so I don't think they would let them do it if they didn't think they were good enough. I would ask for pictures of stuff they have done first though.

I have an aunt who is in beauty school and she's very good at trimming my hair and she gave me my bangs! She's just in training though but her more experienced peers are great AND if you get a dye job or a major cut a professional will be standing by to make sure things go right! And they have tons of practice before they touch your hair.
