I've always been told that looking after your skin well prevents spots, however I don't know how true this is as I hardly ever get spots because I have good genetics. I do look after my skin well though.
I'd establish a clear skin routine. Dependant on your skin type, use a cleanser, face wash, moisturiser, exfoliator, toner and whatever else that is right for you skin. Although I have listed those types of products above, I am very much a fan of using as little products as possible.
I have combo skin, and I use Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, which removes my makeup, cleanses my skin and contains tiny (you can't feel or see them) exfoliating balls. I remove it with warm water and the provided muslin cloth. After, I apply Liz Earle moisturiser for dry/combo skin. That's it, and I moisturise twice a day (morning and night).
Although I recommend Liz Earle, I also recommend the following skincare brands/products -
Elemis (Oxygenating Night Cream, Marine Cream and the cleanser)
Eve Lom
Nivea
Palmers (especially the cocoa butter range)
To avoid spots from makeup, remove all makeup and try not to use comodegenic ingredients. A popular one is ethylhexyl palmitate, mainly found in lipsticks.
