Hey! So, my hair is black. Like, jet black. And I really need it to be platinum blonde. How would I go about this? Thanks!

Well, you can do it at home since you can't go to a salon, bleach your hair and dye it with box dye. You might have to do it a few times to get it platinum. It's going to do quite a bit of damage to your hair though.

Will coconut oil fix that damage up?

Eventually. Coconut oil and eggs is what I use weekly, my hair was extremely damaged about 2 weeks ago, all the hair masks that I've been doing, (I do mine twice a week.) have helped immensely.

Aloe Vera is really good too.

To go from black to platinum I really would suggest going to a salon. They will be able to advise and do it in the least damaging way possible.

Doing it yourself could lead to a lot of damage and nothing can really fix that.

Damage can be fixed. It just takes time.

I wouldn't suggest using box bleach. That ruined my hair in one dye. You can go to Sallys, or any beauty supply and purchase the developer cream & powder. They're not to expensive either.

I bleached my hair twice in two days, then dyed it blonde...needless to say, I shocked my hair, but the damage was easily fixed. Even the hairdresser I went to a month later was shocked I had done so much because my hair was relatively healthy (just split ends, but we cut those off)

I agree with Mari. Go to Sallys beauty supply and ask the lady's which dye and bleach would work best for your hair.

Why do you really need it to be platinum blonde? Unless you really know what you're doing, I wouldn't suggest bleaching it on your own. If you can't go to a salon currently, I wouldn't do it until you can.

Or else your just going to fry your hair.

You have to be careful asking the employees at Sally's though. They're not required to be licensed, and so some of them have not a clue of what they're talking about. I'm not saying they're all like that, but I wouldn't out my full trust in them. Like I said, I'd highly advise waiting until you can get it done professionally.

That extreme of a change is risky, not just because it can run your hair but because you may injure your scalp. Going from black to platinum will take several bleaches, lots of toning, and a lot of deep conditioning.

You'll need powder bleach, a developer (30 vol. is the strongest you should think of using, 20vol. is better for a novice). Bleach a test strand first! Leave it on for no longer than 35-45 minutes (after that it doesn't lighten anymore, it just starts to melt). Wash it, dry it, and see what it looks like. The first bleach will probably result in a ginger orange color. Subsequent bleaches still lighten through various shades of orange and yellow.

You should wait quite a while between bleaches and use conditioning treatments to minimize damage. This is what is tricky: a professional can evaluate the condition of your hair and know if it is going to react well when processed. You have to guess, and hope it does well. The elasticity test and looking for visible damage (split ends, breakage) are indicators of hair health.

Really this isn't something you should attempt on a whim. I did months of research before I bleached my hair, and my hair isn't as dark as yours. Blonde is expensive no matter if you do it yourself or in a salon. Remember that fixing something gone wrong costs a lot more than having it done professionally and correctly from the start.

Also, if your hair has been dyed at all (especially black), you'll need to get the color stripped before you can bleach.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I really think it is best to see a professional. If you can't afford it, wait until you can or invest in a quality wig.
