Hi all, I'm suffering a major hair disaster.
At the end of August I had my hair done at the hairdressers. I had my dark roots bleached and a copper dye applied and it all turned out very even. The hairdressers said that when the colour began to fade I could use a box dye to freshen it up, so yesterday I picked out a Loreal Olia colour in Intense Copper. The hairdresser advised me to put the colour on my roots for twenty minutes, then apply the rest and leave for ten, which I did, but she also advised me to buy two boxes to cover my long hair, which I forgot to do. I followed her instructions with only one box of dye (and I'll admit, the dye was very sparse on the ends of my hair) but now I have bright copper roots and slightly gingery ends! :( It looks awful! I'm naturally dark but lightened my hair to a blonde colour before New Years, when I first dyed my hair ginger. Do you think the reason my ends are lighter because I didn't put enough dye over it? Did I not leave it for long enough? Will I be okay to buy another box of dye tomorrow and just put that on the ends or will I get a funny line where it doesn't match?! HELP!!

Can you post a picture of it?

I am literally crying. I followed every instruction in the box, to the tee. I don't know what's gone wrong.

Your roots were bleached and your ends were dark...is that right?
If so, that's why the roots are bright.

To fix it, I'm not sure...I would either try dying a dark color over it, or strip the color completely and re dye it. Yes, I've done that. Luckily I didn't damage my hair too badly.

It's all about how much color takes to the different parts of your hair.

Like, if your hair is damaged in one section, it may absorb more color in that section. My hairdresser explained it once but I can't remember. But the jist of it was that, it all has to do with hair proteins, blah blah

So I would strip the bright red of color and redye it dark, or just attempt to redye the bright red a darker color
It could go either way though.

It was the other way around! My roots are naturally dark and my ends were bleached! If it was the other way, I could have understood why it had happened, but this doesn't make any sense at all.

When I dyed my hair red after previously having ombre', brown on top, blonde on bottom.. and my roots and my ends took the red more than the entire middle part. It was really weird. So both blonde and brown took the red color, but the middle of my hair didn't take as much and it still had a lot of brown, then I dyed it again the next day and it came out pretty decent. Anyways, I think redying your hair a darker color over the dye you just did will be fine, if you don't dye your hair all the time, then you'll be fine.. it'll damage your hair a little or it may do a lot of damage, everyone's hair is different. But egg & coconut hair masks after you dye your hair and the damage should eventually lighten up.

I'm going to try and get into the hairdressers first thing tomorrow. I think what upsets me the most is the fact that she told me to leave the dye on my roots for so long, and this happens. I'm less than happy with them right now but I need them to tell me how to fix it!

It won't leave a line, you just have to make sure you get all of the color that you don't want and cover it with dye!

Yea, a hair dresser should know better than that. Your roots are always the healthiest part of your hair, meaning it'll take the dye a lot better than damaged hair will. I think applying tip to root is what should've been done.

I'll see what they say. I'd be happy with the colour if it was all over!

Make sure if you dye it again tomorrow you dye it just above the last bit of dyed hair that way the colour will blend and you won't be left with a funny line. Hope it goes well.

I'm a qualified hairdresser and your hairdresser was right to tell you to apply to the roots first as sometimes the ends may grab in the dye quicker than the roots this can be caused because the ends of your hair may be dry.

Why. Would. She. Tell. You. To. Get. Boxed. Dye.?? It's so bad for your hair, and I agree with what Emma B. Said! Good luck!

I mentioned in my post that it would damage hair and all I did was state what I did & my experience with what I did, so I presume you're talking about someone else. Getting it professionally done will damage it as well, maybe not as much as box dye, treatments will eventually get your hair healthy again. I know from experience. Again, just stating what I did and what happened, end of story.

Hey guys,
Got another box today and put it on the bits I missed for 15 minutes. It came up a bit better, not quite as bright as the roots but enough to look passable. Thanks for your advice!
