They're are a lot of ways to do it. I am a make up artist, but I have two degrees in education and clinical psychology. Get your business degree first then go for esthetics. You can also work at Sephora while going to college. Sephora will put you on the right track to becoming a makeup artist. You may not want to hear this, but there are many makeup artists out there. It's like being an actress/actor, only a few make it big. That's why you should focus on a degree and work at Sephora. Sephora will train you to become an artist and help you work your way up the ladder. It will help you gain skills in makeup, skin, and hair. If you do the beauty school route go to esthetician school, unless you really like doing hair. I'm totally not dissing stylists in anyway. I just dont recommend going to just a makeup artistry school. I know some celebrity artists that started out in retail cosmetics and worked their way up. They have worked with Oprah and Taylor Swift. Sephora can trail you and you can get on what is called their pro team. Which has amazing artists that are known nation wide.

I REALLY want to be a makeup artist. I like esthetics as well. I'm a sophomore in high school right now, and I'm trying to figure out what all I need to do to become the best makeup artist I can. I'm thinking I'll get a business degree, then go on to study esthetics and then a makeup school. What's the best thing to do to get as high up as I can? And what can I do now, being 16? Thanks (:

My friend is becoming a makeup artist too!! She was talking to me about it and said that she shadowed makeup artists that did plays or other productions. Then she could learn more and have the same experience as a makeup artist. She also said its really important to find a good cosmetology college. There you can learn, and again get a good experience!! Hope that helps!!! :) I think it's really great that your pursuing a dream like this!!

You could get an internship at a local salon or beauty counter. My friend did that and it ended up really helping her

Hey Samantha, I am actually an Esthetician AND aspiring makeup artist too! Lol. I really love Esthetics, almost as much as I love makeup but to be completely, one hundred percent honest; I learned shit about makeup at Esthetics school. Besides being able to play with the airbrush machine I learned nothing. If you want to go to Esthetics because you love skin then def go for it! But if it's for makeup, save your money and go to a makeup school which is what I'll be doing after I graduate from college. I've also been employed at Sephora before and I don't suggest it. It's nothing but a retail job, they don't teach you anything about makeup just about brands and simple color theory so you can match foundation and such on customers. It's retail, all they want you to do it sell. Let me know if you have any other questions
