Oh and I've also tried twisting my hair in buns and that failed.

I learned to stretch the hair at the roots and then place bobby pins where they can't be seen :)

Also you could try French braiding, and cornrowing! As well as flat twisting, and curl formers are apparently good for curls and stretching them!
