I went to a nail salon and got a shellac manicure, but 2 weeks later when I got it removed, my nail looked absolutely terrible! They were thinner, dryer, and felt really rough.
I've been covering it up with nail polish. Is there any way to restore my nails back to how they used to be, or do I have to just wait and until they grow back healthy?

Don't add any extra nail polish or nail polish remover, it will cause more damage. Hand lotion is key. I have been using Bath and Body Works body lotion for my nails and it works amazingly. Plus they're having a giant sale now.
I bought from wal mart a nail file thingy.. it has 4 sides.. do it twice a week and at the end add a bit of vitamin e oil. the oil can be used whenever. I SWEAR BY THIS! they grew and the nail t ech constantly compliments my nails!! I do shellac and it tears em up if I peel it off-which is a no no! but the 4 sided file and e oil does wonders!! it smooths the ridges out too
Morgan and Josie are completely right, go with cuticle oil and lots of hand lotion. Your best bet is to find oil (not water) based compounds that will seal in as much of your hands' moisture as possible. Also, since it tends to be drier this time of year (I don't know if you live in a region where this isn't true), drink more water! Our skin (and thus nails too!) gets dry in the winter because the air steals moisture, so make sure you're hydrating.
Put lotion on them and massage it in. Use a nail buffer to smooth them. There isn't much u can do to thicken them but wear thick polish to protect them
Polish actually locks in moisture but once they chip, wear off, or you just get bored with the color, people tend to take the polish off and the polish remover is what dries the nails out. so I would rock the natural look for a while and apply nail strengthener and moisturizing cuticle oil religiously. Also, improve your diet and take biotin- or even just a multi vitamin, prenatals are great for hair skin and nails!
