You can go either way with a dramatic smokey eye or neutral smokey eye for example.

This is more of a smokey eye. Remember that it's not supposed to have winged eyeliner. :)

I learned from watching YouTube. Dark to light is the key...from lid to brow bone...like what Kirsten H posted.

Agree with Kirsten's photo the smokey eye traditions from dark to light vertically while a gradient makes the transition horizontally with the darkest color in the crease that transitions to light near the tear duct.
