Sorry I don't know what category to put this under but I figured this worked ok! Sorry if I thought wrong 🙈
SO recently lots of people have been talking to me about becoming a model. Mostly people who no longer work in the business or still have connections. I've decided if I decide to go for this I'm going to do it independently and not have family friends get me going - ***HOW do I get into this industry AND become and stay successful?!***

You need to start at the bottom. Start out by getting a portfolio done and get some good shots of you doing different modelling and poses, show them that you're good. Don't expect to get paid straight away, many or most models start out unpaid and then build a name for themselves and then start getting paid. You need to have a good look and you need to be willing to do different things. Since you are young and pretty, you will be asked multiple times to do glamour (bikini etc) and nude modelling and this is how some girls get into modelling but surprise surprise.. They never really leave the nude side of modelling.

Be prepared to see girls eating tissues all day and taking fat absorbing pills. There may be a lot of bitching and you may end up feeling worthless because of how "imperfect" they make you feel saying you need to change this and that and loose weight etc...

Been there and it's not my cup of tea

I thought I might add that not all places are like this and I'm not trying to offend anyone

What direction do you want to take? Commercial, editorial/ high fashion, freelance, pin up, or beauty? and what are your stats?

Because they are so many facets of this industry, and all of them are valid options!

To get started you, you need a portfolio. I'd look around your local area for modelling agencies, go to modelling conventions and source legit photographers.

I agree with everything that Kellee has said:)

Also be careful for agency scams! There are a ton, and I was almost a victim. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and like these girls said;
Don't let anyone break you :)

The thing is that if you want to join a large agency they do not want you to have a ton of experience typically. they want to build you into what they want. if you are not wanting to join an.

Sorry I meant if you aren't wanting to join an agency, join a modeling website like model mayhem and do your research on the photographers who approach you, and expect to not make money for quite A while, learn to market yourself. if you want more information, feel free to message me, I have quite a bit of knowledge into the different parts of the modeling world.

Becareful of the scams. I'd go with any casting with a male friend who is muscular. First off, some men may be rapist or human traffickers. Second off make sure you read all contracts before you sign. There was a myspace celebrity model who got tricked into doing porn because she signed a paper she did not read.

Many agencies, even real ones will turn you away if you show up with a bodyguard or as the modeling world calls them escorts. Yes your safety is a priority, but remember that if you insist on bringing someone with you, you Will limit who will work work you. A better alternative is to ask for A makeup artist to be on set for shoots. And never every every show up to a legit agency like Ford or Whilhamina with an escort. you will be laughed at, And turned away. there are many other ways to ensure your safety, but honestly photographers are more nervous about an unnecessary person on set, who could steal or break expensive gear or distract the model.

Much safer to be turned away than sold or raped.

I'm just telling you the way it is. you will not be unsafe in a large agency casting like Ford. there are many other ways in ensure your safety. Research on your photographer, getting references, and using a friend as a driver, rather than having them sit in on your shoot are all options. I've been working freelance, which can be dangerous for almost 5 years, and being smart about who I chose to work with, as well doing my research has kept me safe. you can meet with photographerwith a friend before the shoot, you can ask for a make up artist you know and trust to be on shoot, as no photographer I've ever known will turn that down. now I have taken people with me to shoots, but mostly before I turned 18 which. is requested by the photographer as you cannot sign a release without your parent. after I turned 18 I thought it was a comfort thing, but have realized it is not necessary nor will it really keep you that much safer. it'd you are uncomfortable with the photographer you don't shoot with them. it's like fearing for your safety at a job as a waitress. how would your bosses like for you to bring a bodyguard? you would be fired. Sane goes for a modeling job, especially if you are shooting with an agency like Ford or Whilhamina.
