Decided as my hair is black and want it lighter I'm going to do the roots dark brown every time the roots come through is that a good idea.

I wouldn't suggest dying your hair just because virgin hair get lighter faster if you decide to bleach it or anything like that, but I also suggest going to a professional if you decide to go lighter just because it's a process.
