I never heard that about metformin but I know the hair medicine- don't remember the name- can cause liver damage. My doctor refuses to give it to me. I don't want anymore meds, anyway.

I've also got PCOS. I was diagnosed ten years ago (age 13), and currently I'm unmedicated cause of insurance issues. I've heard of a natural supplement called Inositol that is supposed to help lower testosterone, get rid of the facial hair (I basically grow a beard and have to shave every day, yikes!), help balance hormone levels, and can help with causing/regulating periods.

As for the acne, I use a Neutrogena daily facial wash that can also be used as a mask and it seems to help!

Also, very jealous of those of you who aren't overweight or barely over! I gained 100lbs before/around my diagnosis and I can't get it off. ):

Have you talked to your doc about metformin? It is the only thing that helps with weight lost. diet and exercise alone doesn't do anything

Kimberly, I added you on Facebook!! and yes, I'm very very very lucky that I'm not overweight. It's hard though, because my doctor said sometimes that losing weight can help, but it's almost impossible for me to lose it! I've weighed the same for almost 3 years and although I'm not skinny, I'm a healthy weight for my height. It's very discouraging to try and try and see no results. But since I'm not "overweight" per say, I doubt my doctor would agree to putting me on anything to help. And I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one with awkward body hair! Although mine isn't nearly as bad as some of yours(which I'm so grateful for), it does make for a bit of a confidence killer, especially when my friends point it out(not knowing/meaning to) and knowing there's really nothing to help it! I really hope that my condition doesn't worsen, and I hope that all of yours improves! It's nice to know you're not alone in something like this! :) I don't know anyone personally who has suffered, so it's kind of scary going into something like this alone. I'm so thankful for forums like this!

As a quick note, I'm terrified of shaving my face with a real razor because of razor burn and risk of nicks, so I use an electric razor and just shave every day using it since it's almost impossible to nick yourself with one!

I am glad I saw this topic, there is so much useful information!

I had multiple kids tease me like "oh my god you have a beard" (back before I noticed it and didn't shave) "haha oh my god she DOES have a beard" "I'm going to bring her some shaving cream and a razor" but as I get older, I realize that I cannot help it. So those who taunt me for it can shove it. I thought I was the only one. I am ones of the rare ones and I am.pretty high up on the hursutism scale but at least I know I'm not the only one. And know.since I know what it is, I can inform people. I just pray one day this weight will come off and I can afford laser hair removal.

Hey there! I was diagnosed with PCOS a little over a year ago and instead of putting me on birth control, my doctor prescribed progesterone. Basically I had to take two pills every night for 10 days in a row and then I would get my period. It was a little tedious because I had to figure out on a calendar when I would have to start and stop taking it every month but it worked really well. My skin cleared up and I got my period. I did just switch over to metformin though because the progesterone made me sleepy. The metformin works as well. Both of these options are good but progesterone is nice because it's something your body can actually make on its own so its less "foreign" in a way. I would definitely talk to your doctor though!
