Practice makes perfect. seriously. you have to make it work with your eyeshape, concentrate. lol. Use a steady hand as well, rest your elbow on something

Also to make them even I'd suggest do the opposite side of your dominant hand first (so if you're right handed, do the left eye first), since it's easier to do the eye on your dominant hand side it'll help you make it even to the other sode.

Getting them even isn't that hard and you don't need tape to do so...
The picture that Marilyn posted is good...

Look at step 1, where where only the line is drawn.
Before proceeding to step 2 , repeat step one on your other eye.

Are they both identical?
If yes, then you can continue your winged eyeliner. If not, do as you need to adjust.
This is by far the most fool proof way to get them even, and how I do my winged eyeliner very quickly. Once you get both eyes to match step one, you're good to go.
