What should I do if I just got a light summer tan but my foundation makes me look so much paler? Should I buy a darker colour? If so, what if it's too dark for my skin tone?

I buy a color that's my skin color at its darkest, and lightest. That way I don't have to buy any colors in between, just mix accordingly(:
