How do you feel about artist assistants?

The reason I wanted to ask this is because I've been thinking of asking successful MUAs in my area if I could assist them on a job, shadow or even come along to watch on a shoot or set. I mentioned it to my mum for a wiser second opinion. She told me I should never do it because they might think of it as me "trying to take their job" and that they might be annoyed about it in general, thinking I want to "steal their techniques and ideas".
Now, my mum is no industry professional (and quite unsupportive of my career choice) but some of what she said seemed to make sense and I even feel a bit silly for thinking otherwise.

How would you feel if a less experienced artist asked (politely) if they could come and assist you on a job?

This is a tricky situation. The makeup artists in my region DMV are very competitive plus all of them want to do their own thing. They might act rude to you if you are with them or might not let you learn while at big events or bridals. That is a potential. Plus when you venture out on your own they might feel you stole their tricks and techniques. My best advice is to practice on friends or models who are building their portfolios. There are many out there. You will build your portfolio as well, network, and potentially get more other clients. I started slow too and advertised a lot before getting a bridal. Paid job. From that time till now I have grown in my work and have had happy clients and some bad. Good luck hope this helps.

I dont think they each will react differently some will say yes use you as a coffee waitress youll lesrn nothing some will love to teach you, if I have a big job and need a couple extra hands who am I going to add someone from a school recommended by the teacher or someone who took the initiative to seek me out prior to learn from me and someone Ive seen work. im def gonna pick the girl/guy who sought me out and learned from me. make sense?

OK I probably should have mentioned that I have already "ventured out on my own", have a decent portfolio, happy with my kit etc. I just mainly wanted to do it for a different experience! Sorry for any confusion. In my area there seems to be 4 or 5 big successful artists and everyone else to them is considered a newbie, one of them who's work I've loved for ages and wanted to ask... however I can kind of imagine them being the type to use me as a coffee waitress as Joey said haha! Thanks a lot for the responses though guys, I can see it from a much bigger picture now. :)

I would hate the feeling I just standing there and being told to do other things that are not related to me being taught. But wish you good luck for the future :)
