That is the question!!

I've usually gone to the salon, but with a busy schedule, cost and an army of greys permanently on my head I ask the question...

Do you prefer doing yours at home or do you use a salon?

Which one do you use and briefly why please :o)

Thanks everyone!! xxxx

Usually salon, I've know my hair stylist for years and I let her take care of the hair lol. But since I've moved out of country I have been coloring my own (Only because I prefer her to deal with my hair). For me I like having someone else do it. It's easier & she knows my hair so well. It's a little pamper session for me to relax & enjoy.

But it all comes down to if you're comfortable with coloring your own hair. :)

I agree... Having it done in a salon is much better and the color lasts longer. Unfortunately my hair dresser just moved and she is the only one I trusted with my hair so I have to go on the search for a new one... But I am currently coloring my own hair since it is so much cheaper!

I have never enjoyed going to a salon. The wash basins your neck is on are like guillotines!

I know it's down to not finding a suitable salon, if I did I'd love it! There just simply isn't a hair stylist that does it for you.. they do it how they love it.

Like yourselves my stylist was my landlord and worked for Vidal Sassoon which was perfect for the 2 years he did my hair, alas, he has moved on and no where to be seen, much to my disappointment!!

I haven't found a salon that I feel good in and tried all the top ones in town..think I'll have to DIY dye!!!!!!!!!  eeeeeek!

@Alicia.. How come the colour lasts longer from salons?? I was refused buying at a wholesalers I have no beauty diploma. Is there a secret the salons have that the ladies/public have yet to see on the store shelves????? EXCITING!

Yes, it is so hard to trust just any old person with our locks of beauty (albeit tried and tested!!)

@Stacey.. It's given me more 'ooomph' to give DIY a go!!

I do both! I go through periods where I go to the salon and other times I just do it myself. I recently found someone who works out of their home! She's been licensed for many years and has her own little salon in her basement. She gives me great deals, so I have been going to her lately!

When I do my own color at home, I get my supplies from Sally's Beauty Supply Store. The color brand I used is Wella? (I think that's it) and it's been great! Have never had any issues and the color lasts a long time.

I'd say if you are trying to save money, are doing one all over color, and it's not a drastic change from your current color, why not give it a shot at home? If you're doing something a little more complex, it's definitely worth going to a professional.

I do it diy. I have never been to a stylist to have it done. I also change up what brands I use a lot because I dont just do touch ups to my hair i will re die it a completely new color, plus i can never remember the name of the dyes i get. I usually just get my dies at walmart seeing as most places have the exact same dyes. I have never had a bad experience with dying my hair at home, and it is cheaper and worth a shot. Just make sure you get a color that even if it comes out to light you will still like.

I do my own, but that is because I have short hair that grows out fast. Even with longer hair I did it myself but if something exotic with different colors, then the salon

I've never been to a salon to color my hair. Personally I just see it as pricey for something I can do myself. Not saying I'm against it, maybe I'll try in the future. I've always been a do-it-yourself kind of gal, so if I can find the tools I need at Sally's or even those hair dyes in a box from Target or Walgreens, I'll do it. But I always do my research beforehand to try my best to do it as correct as possible.

@Terra M - I cut my own hair too! Except I didn't go to school for it. But YouTube & Google is seriously my best friend. haha

I usually dye my own hair or i have my mom do it. I have only bleached my hair once and something like that i went to the salon.

Box colors you buy from drugstores, or like target are very bad for your hair. They have metallic dyes in them that can really damage your hair, and if you use the wrong color they can be extremely hard to remove or correct by someone at a salon. Also one thing that a lot of people don't realize who do their own hair with box dye is if they went darker and then decide later to go lighter, you cannot lighten previously colored hair with color, you can only strip or bleach the darker color. There is a huge difference between box colors and professional colors. I would always recommend going to a professional or if you know someone who has a cosmo license ask them to pick up color for you and you can still color it yourself.

I'm a penny pincher so I would rather DIY. I've never dyed my hair but my mama does it all the time and it always turns out great on her. :) I like my hair color, but I've been wanting to dye it just to dye it lately. I dont know why haha.

Thanks for all the responses!! WOW!
Salons - I did not know the salon colours were newer/fresher/longer lasting, that was defo something I'd not given thought to up against the box DIY. (Would be very interesting to see the effects on hair of long term DIY against salon for curiosity sake...*coughs.. Google)

Dye DIY - I'm so glad to see everyone has or does use them!! I have not wanted to use them and wanted to stick with the salon.. just sometimes those greys force your hand!!

So I took the plunge.............Garnier, herbishine, semi-permanenet, dark brown 300, optimum grey coverage, works in 10 mins. SPECIAL OFFER

It did the trick!! For £4.61.. no grey hairs, worked in 10 mins, no drastic dye lines, generous coverage overall, messy floor and walls and a sleek soft straightened finished look. :o)

Has it changed my mind from using the salon.........a big juicy NO. I'll be going there next time..so till then beautylish'us, thank you for your help & info xxxx
