Dying Brown Hair Red at Home

The first time that I went red I went to my normal hair dresser and loved the way it came out. But as we all know red fades super fast and I can't she'll out $90 every month to keep it fresh.

Do you guys know of an awesome at home dye that would get me the results I want. My hair is a medium brown and I'm would love the red that Scarlett Johansson had on her glamour magazine cover.

Any help would be great. I can do box dye or the mix yourself kind you get at a beauty supply store. Just give me a brand and dye name :)

I've noticed box dyes from the drugstore have really been phasing out the shades of red that they carry lately. I would go the beauty supply store route. I usually get the Ion brand dye because they have the best selection of reds (at least at Sally Beauty Supply).

Also depending on the shade you end up going an easy way to kind of help keep your red from fading so fast, is to get like a manic panic or other really bright more "alternative" hair dye and mixing it into a mild sulfate free conditioner and using it once a week or so when you shower and letting it sit in for a few minutes before rinsing. It helps keep your color fresher longer. And because its in the conditioner it doesn't tend to dye your hands and scalp.

the loreal hicolor is amazing you dont have to bleach your hair before use it with a 30 developer they have several shades of red use it with the protein color filler and a red shampoo like quantum riveting reds! The color filler is amazing i use it while im coloring my hair you can do it before to prep it but it works just as well while coloring too helps the red pigment stick better to your hair esepcially the ends where they are usually more damaged. It also works as a refresher in between coloring as well.

How bout asking your stylist to recommend something for you. She can tell you a similar product and color or order it for you. Another cheaper trick is to go to a beauty school. They use all professional products and are supervised by their qualified teacher. This is a fantastic way to keep up with that red without the high price. ;)

beleive it or not, and it sounds weird but try henna. there is a henna specificaly for hair and they have pleanty of reds. if it starts to fade u simply put tea or coffee on it to bring out the color. its all natural and wont damage ur hair. its actually really good for it. :)

Dont use Henna if you want to dye your hair again at a later date. This was one of the first things we are taught at hair school. Henna has a odd chemical reaction with hair industry colourants I would not recommend this. Have a google on that.
Also is the desired red shade currently lighter then the hair colour you have now? If so, some lifting may need to happen.

What I would suggest is that you have it done at the salon the very first time and use crazy colour to revive it every time it fades as you are correct red hair fades very very quickly.

My hair already has dye in it so henna would be out if the question. I did google it and really liked the color it gives... Such a shame! I think I'm going to wait and go to Sally beauty supply with my older sister and find something there. I figured she was a good person to take since she was the one who dyed my hair first and has done her hair tons of different colors. Thank you all though for all your input! I really appreciate it :)

Also I'm going to try the sulfate free shampoo and conditioner to see if it helps at all!

I used shcwarzkopff brand and it was amazing! Although when I did try to go back brunette it was hard to cover the red.
