Finally re-opening my YT channel! Do's and Don'ts?

6

Hi guys! I just treated myself to a new HD camera I've been saving up for forever :) I wanted to start making beauty videos again since my last ones were VERY bad quality.

My main problem is, I don't want to record myself talking because I have a strong Scottish accent which some people might find difficult to understand despite me being well spoken. I know this can be an off-putting factor for alot of people.

I just wanted to ask some of you who are more experienced at making videos (and watching them!) and wanted to know the basic do's and don'ts, any advice and stuff like that?

I find myself getting bored if videos go beyond 6 mins, I understand certain techniques take time but I can only watch someone apply eyeshadow for so long. Good lighting! And if you are worried about the voiceover stuff just put notes... short ones tho and you can speed up lengthy applications! good luck!

I don't talk over my videos, either. Mostly because it's distracting and often corny, but also to cater to those that are hearing impaired.

First rule of making videos? Do it your way. Someone will always hate what you're doing no matter how much thought, time, and effort you put into it. And if you please that one person, 40 others will hate you. lol. So do it the way you like it and if not everyone likes it that way...so be it! They can make their own videos!

Don't make them too long, but get all the info in. I had a 2-minute section of talking and people complained. 2 minutes. And every comment was someone asking a question that I answered in that 2 minutes lol. But I didn't change it, because that information needed to be there. This goes back to doing things the right way, YOUR way!

Be consistent. People like that. Make each video unique with a similar feel.

I think you should embrace the accent. Look at pixiwoo - strong british accent and they're huge here in the US. Adds to the charm of their channel! If your heritage puts people off, then you don't need them watching your channel;)

Do have a thick skin. People are mean on the internet because it's easy. Whenever someone says something mean about our models or whatever, my team and I just laugh. Doesn't phase anyone! I actually told one of my models this week that someone adamantly accused her of getting a nose job and we about died laughing.

Don't make videos to get subscribers and don't beg for them, either. Or spam other channels. It's tacky and people will see that you're trying too hard.

And most importantly - connect with your audience! My channel speaks mostly to newbies and young professionals in the makeup industry; future pros. That's why I come to Beautylish, offer advice on Facebook and Twitter, and create my videos by request. Each and every viewer is important.

Hope that helps!

Okay, I have a hard of hearing (we strongly prefer d/Deaf/hard of hearing over "hearing impaired", by the way) accent and while I've gotten comments about how my voice is so~ annoying, I don't let it bother me and you shouldn't let the Scottish accent thing bother you either. Hell, people are going to like your Scottish accent more than my German/Southern US HOH accent. c:

On reviews, accents can~ sometimes be a problem, but overall, with tutorials it's usually (well it shouldn't really be) an issue because personally, if I can see what you're doing, it's all good.

i like to mix and change it up. some tutorials i will do voice overs, some i will do just me doing makeup with music, some i will talk the whole time. that way i can see what people like and its just a fun change (: be yourself and have fun! if you are bored people will tell. (:

I actually really like watching videos with no talking or voiceovers, just a little written note over the screen while the person is applying makeup. It's more straight and to the point that way which I like!
for example I love this girls videos! she's on here too:

On the other hand I DO like watching ones where people talk as well. As long as it's not a 15 minute video you know? And don't think about people not liking your accent! That is what makes you, YOU! The only thing you might want to do in case it is hard for people to understand is to talk a bit slower. I haven't heard you speak so I can't say whether or not you talk fast! But it's just one thing to maybe keep in mind.
