Colored pencils. Makeup does not show up the same on paper as it does on the face, and applying it can also wear on your brushes and waste product. And lip glosses and lipsticks eat the paper over time. Seriously, the oils bleed and you end up with a ring around the lips. Makeup can also smear on paper...not a good look when presenting your look to a designer.
Using makeup is more of a MAC trick, great for a retail environment, but when working on runway, you need a chart that will hold up and demonstrate colors more accurately. That, and colored pencils are much faster to work with. If you're not good with pencils or just really love using makeup on your face charts, I guess that's when makeup is the answer. The pic in the post I linked is colored pencil. Still looks great after a couple years!

Where can I find face charts that I can download or purchase? I tried to google but all I got was videos and tutorials on how to use them. Thanks!

Hi, the only ones that I have found are the ones of the QOSMEDIX website see the link below. Hope this helps !!

You can do a google image search for face charts and use a face that you like. I personally do not like the drawing of the Qosmedix face chart.

Thank you all!!! Would you recommend using actual makeup on them or using colored pencils?

MAKEUP

Always use actual makeup. And use older makeup brushes to apply since the blending on paper can sometimes be rough on the brush and you don't want to ruin your good brushes.

Ok...thanks!!

@Jordan...what kind of colored pencils do you use? Would it be the regular crayola ones or is there another type?
Jordan L.
Doesn't matter. Prismacolor makes the best shades and has the widest range of colors, but any large box of colored pencils will do;)
Michelle C.
Ok..I'm using crayola and they aren't really blending that well so I wondered if artist ones would be better. I'm going to check those out. Thank you!
