I use NYC bronzer in Sunny. It works well and it's matte, plus inexpensive. Friends of mine also use a darker version of a pressed powder. I might try that when I need something new.
I agree with the E.l.f Blush and Bronze duo, NYC sunny Bronzer, Physicians Formula Baked Matte Bronzer, NYX Matte Bronzer, Rimmel Natural Bronzer, or if you are pretty fair skinned you can also use a darker pressed powder. I have also used darker concealor for contouring in a pinch. The Black Radiance Concealer Stick works well for that.

I've used NYX pressed powders for the face in several shades darker than my own. Thus, you will get a LOT of bang for your buck!
