So, I read somewhere that you should throw out eye shadows somewhere from 6 months to 18 months (I know, big gap there). But, for all of us makeup addicts who like to collect eye shadows, like me, we could have shadows that last that long, or longer -- especially if they costing around $15 a pop. If there is any worry about bacterial contamination, couldn't we just break up the shadow, mix with rubbing alcohol, and repot?

Su - makeup in powder form can generally last a VERY long time (I'm talking years)...as long as you sanitize them properly they should be good. I would be more concerned about disposing of liquid products.  =)

Hey Su! I agree with Nancei. As long as its a powder product, it's going to last a very long time! Worry more about liquid products, they probably have a shelf life of 2-3 years :)

Powder products have a very long shelf life. As long as there is no opportunity for bacteria growth (i.e. - using them wet and not letting them fully dry before storing again), you should be fine. Like anything else, if the texture seems off or the performance drops.. it's time to chuck it.

This may be obvious to most of you beauties but using super clean brushes each time will reduce the contamination factor. Also, don't share makeup with friends.

the best way to keep you eyeshadows longer from time to time just spritz them with some rubbing alcohol to kill any potential bacteria

i read that eyeshadows have a shelf life of 2 years. General hygiene will maintain the product in good condition i.e. clean brushes, clean canvas, not blowing onto the brush or eyeshadow etc

99.9% of products now have that tiny symbol on the packaging somewhere with the number of months the product is good for.

I don't think you have to break it all up...simply spray it with beauty so clean which is a sanitizer for your makeup products. I have some very old shadows that have never contaminated me or any of my clients. You can hang on to makeup for a long time if you practice proper sanitation habits.
