I'm thinking of getting my makeup done at MAC for my senior prom. I'm going to get it done at a MAC counter so the thing is, is that I have to spend $50 or more on any products that I want. What products would you ladies suggest I get?

Legally, they can't charge for the actual makeup applications if the person is not licensed which is why they force people to buy the products. I find it to be deceptive for MAC to force a person to purchase a product to get the makeup done.
Our own experience: My daughter had her makeup done at MAC last year and had to buy the $50 in products but we ended up having her return the makeup because she had an allergic reaction to something in the cosmetics. Forcing someone to buy is a good way to lose a customer.

Ohh i see. But did the completed look look nice though?
And do they make people buy the products too at MAC stores? (not counters)

I had them do my makeup one day, but I wasn't asked to purchase anything... also, if you go to a different brand's counter (like Urban Decay) they will be more than happy to do it for free. I can't tell you how many times I was just walking past and they asked me if I wanted to have my makeup done.

I hate scare tactics in retail. Provide great service and she will come back and spend +$50 over time.
Here's the cold hard truth as I know it: Most cosmetic employees have to sell a specific amount per hour, if they fail to meet this goal, they will go down in their hourly wage (usually adjusted every 6 months), to match a wage that meets the amount they can "actually" sell. I know from personal past experience, having a counter full of girls just for prom makeup completed KILLED my daily goals because they NEVER made a purchase. It could take weeks to dig yourself out of that hole because you are dedicating an entire shift for dress up.
I know that might sound harsh but that is the reality of the business. You're being asked to make up for the 'real' customers that artist is missing out on selling to. *sigh*
Tell them you can only buy the lipstick for touch-ups (MAC is $12.50) at this time but to start a client file with the products used for future purchases. Don't feel pressured to purchase. xoxo
