11 Winter Weather Beauty Tips

Now if only I had a winter wonderland like in this picture! Florida has insanely bi-polar weather, ranging from 40 to 78 degrees, in one city. Normally the 60s and 70s is commonplace for us during the winter, but during the colder days, my skin and hair can definitely feel the difference. So how do you battle winter weather? Well here a few tips to make your winter wonderland more enjoyable.

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
The dry air, dries your skin and that is a given. But how you moisturize is really important. You want to look for lotions that contain Olive oil, Hemp Seed oil, Aloe Vera, Shea butter, Milk and Honey. These ingredients are going to moisturize and penetrate deep into your skin to help your skin retain moisture.
I like Swedish Beauty's Aloe There which contains Honey, Hemp Seed and Aloe. Its moisturizing, but not greasy. For very dry skin, body butters can work especially well because they are thicker in consistency. When looking a lotion to sooth dry skin, you want to stay away from lotions with mineral oil. Mineral oil does not moisturize your skin and does not get absorbed by your skin. Instead, mineral oil sits on the top layer of your skin, clogging your pores and preventing your skin from "breathing." This prevents your skin from absorbing oxygen and eliminating harmful toxins and waste products. Mineral oil is used in most commercial and drug store lotions because it is cheap and deceives you into believing you are moisturizing. But over time, mineral oil does dry out you skin because it dissolves the natural oils of your skin. Dry skin also makes the sign of aging more apparent. So please ladies, moisturize, but do not moisturize with mineral oil! Be sure to read the ingredient label of your current lotion.

2. Grab a Cream Cleanser Instead.
Yes To Carrots' Daily Cream Facial Cleanser removes make-up, dirt and oil without stripping the moisture from my skin. The Beta-Carotine helps fight skin damage along with other anti-oxidants. Aloe and Shea- Butter replenish moisture without being oily or greasy. Over drying your skin with alcohols and then over moisturizing your skin can cause serious break outs.

3. Lip Balm Please!
Using a lip balm helps prevent dry, chapped lips. I like Eos Lip Balm in Honeydew. The egg packaging is cute and interesting. This lip balm is petroleum free, and like mineral oil, petroleum based products are drying. This lip balm is super moisturizing and the scent is light and pleasant. However, it takes a couple swipes to get a good amount on your lips. It is also important to wear lip balm with SPF. Especially in areas with snow, UV light is reflected and your skin and lips need to be protected. I also like Burt's Bees lip balm with SPF 15.

If you lips are already chapped, or get chapped even with balm, a lip scrub is going to exfoliate those pieces of dry chapped lips. I like Victoria's Secret Pro Smooth FX Lip Scrub. The scrub is sugar based, and exfoliates well without being too abrasive. It also comes with a pan of lip balm, which is very moisturizing.

4. Keep Your Heat Down Low, and Your Steam Kept Back
Resist the urge to crank up the heat when the temperatures drop. Your heater severely dries out your skin, let alone you electric bill! Try warm blankets or hoodie instead in order to save your skin. Scorching hot showers feel great (guilty as charged), but the hot water draws water out of your skin.

5. Use a Moisturizing Body Wash and Skip Bar Soap
Bar soap can dry out your skin or leave filmy residues. Opt for a creamy or moisturizing lather instead. I use Yes To Cucumbers' Shower Gel. This gel contains Cucumbers (duh), Aloe Vera, Green Tea and Dead Sea Minerals that moisturize, sooth and nourish your skin. The scent is pleasant and light and the gel lathers up nicely. This gel moisturizes my skin without the filmy residue.

6. If You Can't Bake It, Fake It.
Snow White's skin was as white as snow, but that doesn't mean yours has to be. Sunless tanners give you a summer glow with out the harmful rays of the sun. At home solutions such as lotions and sprays, save you a trip to the salon. Norvell Amber Sun products are my favorite for sunless tanning. Norvell's products are not orange by any means (seriously) and give you a great bronze color. Really though, it fakes it so good I can't even tell it's a sunless tan. My favorite to use are the lotions which work best when applied after you dry off after a shower. The formula is moisturizing and does not have that nasty after tan odors that are pretty common. The scent is light and pleasant and doesn't hang around for the entire day. These lotions are also streak-free, just make sure you apply in small circular motions and allow the full time to try. The spray is a little harder to use, but lasts the longest and gets you the darkest. I recommend using a boyfriend or bestfriend to spray you instead.

7. Love Your Locks
Your hair needs moisture too! The best treatment for your hair is your natural oils of your hair and scalp. This means you cannot wash your hair everyday! Skip a day (or two) of washing your hair and your locks will thank you. Especially in the winter months, over washing your hair and the overuse of heated tools will over dry your hair. Using moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and leave in treatments will help awaken your hair from its winter slumber. My favorite line of shampoos is Organix. The smoothing duo contains Shea Butter, yogurt proteins and Avocado oils that really condition my hair. Another favorite of mine is the nourishing duo, which contains Coconut Milk. It is also important to avoid shampoos that contain a lot of sulfates. Sulfates seriously strip and dry out your hair which can cause major breakage.

8. Get Back Germs!
Our immune systems are most vulnerable during colder months. Hand sanitizers are great for keeping the germs down, but the alcohol in hand sanitizer can really dry out your skin. Gold Bond Ultimate Hand Sanitizer a creamy lotion that kills 99.9% of germs and is alcohol-free.

9. My Eyes!
My eyes and eye areas are especially dry during winter. When the skin around my eyes are dry, fine lines are very apparent and my skin looks almost scaly (scary)! Yes to Carrots Eye Can C Clearly Now is nice and creamy with out being greasy. This cream smooths my skin and absorbs well so there isn't a filmy feeling.

10. Scrub a Dub Dub
Using a body scrub like Tree Hut's Shea Sugar Body Scrub once a week will buff away any dry flaky skin cells. Body scrubs can also sooth rough areas like your elbows, knees, feet and hands. The Coconut and Shea Butter helps moisturize your skin cells as dead ones are buffed away.

11. SPF It Up!
The rest of your body will be bundled up during the winter, but your face is left to bare the UV-rays of the sun by it's lonesome. The sun is actually closer to us during the winter and the UV radiation is strong. If you live in a powder puff magical land where it snows, the UV light is going to be reflected upward towards your face off of the snow. Therefore, it is important to use a moisturizer that contains SPF. My favorite is Proactiv's Oil Free Moisturizer which doesn't clog my pores. The moisturizer absorbs into my skin nicely, leaving it nice and smooth.
