video help!

what's a good video converter that will not wash out the color quality? I am using imovie for editing and it doesn't accept avi files. I've tried using handbrake but they color quality decreases dramatically.

i emailed microsoft when i had the same problem with windows movie maker and they had me download format factory its free no virus and does the job!
