Hey all, I was just hired to do makeup for a group of employees for a local business. There a both men and women. The director of the shoot requested very light/natural makeup. I usually only work with bridal parties or special events, so glam is my thing. I've never applied makeup to a man to look natural, only for theatrical things. Any advice on what to do, or how to apply it? I use silicon based airbrush foundation, would that be appropriate for men? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Chrissy,
If it's light and natural, your job is pretty easy. Since it's a shoot and you've done bridal makeup I'm sure you have non reflective powders and concealers in your kit? I like to think of it as a analog photoshop ;). Just cover any blemishes, use a HD translucent powder to minimize pores and fine lines on camera and do some light contouring. An airbrushed foundation MAY be a bit too much depending on what system you are using.
Also brows are a big thing - it's very personal, however. Ask them if they'd like a light clean up and use a wax for any wild, wirey hairs.
Easy as pie - good luck! You'll have to share the photos after!

Alicia, thank you so much! Would you think a powder foundation would work better? Something like studio fix from Mac? What is your favorite brow wax to use? I have a few in my kit such as Mac, UD and two faced. I've heard really good things about Anastasia brow products.

I have a Temptu airbrush system and use their line of makeup. I have silicon base makeup and water based makeup. For the women, do you still think either or will be too heavy? Should I go with a powder foundation for them?

I'm sure the woman would prefer airbrush (you can ask each one their preference) and on camera they will look flawless, not overdone. As for powder foundations, I know Makeup Artist Wayne Goss prefers Bare Minerals but because of the sunscreen this can reflect on the camera light. Studio Fix will be good for the women and perhaps as blemish coverage for the men but I think it may be a bit too heavy. Just a little bit of concealer - I love Inglot because you can build the freedom palette but Smashbox is also good and has a variety of color correctors as well - with Make Up For Ever's translucent HD Finishing powder (applied very lightly with a big fluffy brush) should be just fine. Your temptu system will, however come in handy with contouring as it's hard these days to find a good matte bronzer so just use a foundation shade darker than their skintone to contour.
For brows, Anastasia is by far the master, but a clear gel such as Too Faced's (it's what I use on my own brows, actually) I think would be just fine. You're really just doing some clean up work. Hopefully they don't just roll out of bed without shaving knowing they're going to be on camera ;)
Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

For a natural male look I typically stick with a very thin layer of airbrush and the lightest bit of concealer, and/or *if needed* some powder just for shine. don't forget the skin prep, though, that's the biggest part.
