Which shade from which brand drugstore hair colouring is best for black hair? I'd love to dye (part of) my hair.. I know it's much better to let it dye by the hairdresser, but it's soooo expensive :/

NONE. Colour will not lift colour. You are better off saving your money and getting it done professionally. If it means you have to save for months and months, so be it.

Kathy, you won't be able to dye your hair to a lighter shade with out the help of a bleach based product, however you could add red tones to your hair. It will be subtle but could be very pretty (:

Garnier has a few shades made specifically for dark hair. Whenever I dye my hair though, I usually bleach first, but I'm usually putting a crazy color that needs to be vibrant. So it depends on how much lighter you want to go. I've used the Dark N Lovely brand hair color kits and it was a honey blonde/brown shade and it lightened my hair a bit but definitely not to what I thought it would. Also, check out student salons, because they're cheaper and there are teachers on hand to make sure it goes well. OH! And Living Social and sites like that usually have deals on hair color treatments and stuff.

okay, by all means i a not a professional. BUT from personal experiences. i had naturally dark brown hair & i dyed my hair red using the garnier fructis ultra intense color for dark hair as andrea mentioned before me. you can either go dark red or a lighter red. i went both and i saw amazing changes. although, i may warn you. Dying your hair damages it especially if it is getting lightened. i can only imagine how many harsh chemicals that dye has in it but it works. and if your on a budget like i was at the time then it will work! :) they aso have a light brown shade in the collection. but they are pretty popular so theyre hard to find.
visit their website. i hope i helped! DONT BLEACH YOUR HAIR THOUGH! lol it will kill it!

It's not quite drugstore, more like beauty supply, but Loreal makes a specific line for coloring dark resistant hair. It's called High Color. You'd have to buy the color and developer and mix it yourself, so it's more advanced than a box dye. It's going to damage your hair regardless. Lightening your hair in any way does. But the Loreal High Color lift and deposit in one process instead of two.
Still, this isn't a "beginner level" hair color process. If you are new to color, you'd be *much* better off saving your pennies and going to a pro.
