After a couple months of trying to decide whether I wanted to try going no-poo (no using shampoo/conditioner), I finally started last night! I have stick straight, baby fine hair (but a LOT of it), and even after I started only washing my hair every few days, my hair would still get really oily. I am pretty certain it has to do with the shampoos I was using stripping my hair of its natural oils and my scalp was trying to make up for that.
My hair is a little bit oily today, not bad - but I know that is probably because the more we strip away the natural oils, the more demand we are creating and the more oils our bodies will make so your body will still be overproducing oil and there will be a lot of oil until your body reaches a balance again. I'm willing to wait it out, and can't wait until I see an improvement in my hair!
I'm hoping this will make my hair more manageable (I used to have to use tons of product to get my hair to do anything).
The way to go no-poo that I've found is to dissolve 1 TBSP of baking soda in just enough water to make a paste. Apply this to your roots only; work it in and let it sit for a minute. Next, pour about 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a cup and add water. After you rinse the baking soda out, pour the apple cider vinegar over the ends of your hair, let it sit for a minute and then rinse it out. This helps condition and detangle.
That’s all there is to it! It's super easy, and CHEAP to boot.
I also make my own body wash, but that's a whole other story.
What do you guys think? Is it crazy? Does anyone do it now? Do you have any tips/tricks to get through the 'detox' stage?
Actually what your doing is using an older shampooing technique (: if it works for you I can't say I see anything wrong with that, your hair will just smell funny. Be careful with the vinegar though, the apple cider will help but if you have any dyes on your head, or you have natural ash blonde or red toned hair it can change the color. If your wanting to stay away from preservatives and harsh cleansers, try one of the moisturizing Organix hydrating products. Either way, good luck! Report back (:
I do something similar. I gradually worked from washing every day to once a week over the course of a year. I do use shampoo and conditioner though. My favorites are soak and float from lush and i alternate between a deep condtioning neem conditioner and nature gate's everyday herbal conditioner. I used to have super oily hair but this method has worked very well for me.
Thanks for all the input! I will definitely have to look into the natural products you all suggested - I have yet to find a completely natural product but who knows, maybe there is one out there!
So far I have not had many problems with what I'm doing - except I learned the hard way do NOT get the apple cider vinegar on your scalp - it makes it oily again within like a day! =(
Other than that, everything is going pretty well - it may sound weird, but it's a strangely liberating feeling using just baking soda and vinegar. Also, my hair does not smell like vinegar when dry, which is a common misconception.
I guess it's hard to say if this will be something that would work long-term after only 1 week at it, but so far I'm pretty pleased with the results. My hair is soooo shiny! =)
My favorite hair routine I have tried so far is using a basic drugstore shampoo (clear scalp and hair therapy at the moment) followed by conditioner (Kirkland signature moisture). On days when I'm not washing it I only apply conditioner all over and then rinse it out. Surprisingly most conditioners have cleansing agents so they help control oil build up on the surface of your hair without stripping it like shampoo
Congrats! I've always wanted to do this so bad. I was trying to get through the 'detox' stage but my hair is super oily. I broke down and used shampoo. :(

I actually use a product called "No poo". Cleansing conditioner so it's the same principle. I have fine, but very color treated hair. I love No Poo!

My nanna used to just use coconut oil as conditioner, that's it. She was part Samoan. She had lovely hair.
