I'm currently using a mix of the red and magenta on my hair. Love the product, and you can control your degree of lightening with your choice of developer, so there's no need to pre-lighten.

Also, my natural hair color is a dark brown and I don't bleach it first. I use a 30 volume developer on my roots, and 20 or less on the rest
