I want pursue a career as a MUA but don't know where to start. I know my make-up but was wondering if there is a jumping off point I could start at. There isn't really a school in my area.
Start locally. And Modelmayhem is always a good place to network with photographers and aspiring models.

do you need some sort of license to be a MUA? I'd love to start out small as well. I am in the Miami area.
I know in Texas you don't have to have a license.

You need to acquire a license/certification if you would like to work in a salon that offers makeup services or for select Pro discounts.

You need to acquire a diploma/certification in order to not only be recognized in the industry, but if you want to pursue it as a career in TV/Film. There are schools out there and make sure they are accredited schools. They will teach you not only makeup but Special FX, airbrushing, and etc. I also obtained my esthetician license... <--- that was more for me then anything... but it seems to add to what I do as an MUA. You don't have to have a license to do MUA, but having a diploma/certificate stated your are not only trained in makeup but also the skills in sanitation, Theater, and Special FX. Basically you'll cover the playing field completely. There are many MUA just specializing in Modeling makeup... but to really get out in the industry. I would look for a school. Hope it works out for you. Good luck and always look for the best in everything !!! :) Oh and a major plus... getting your certifications help with major discounts with tons of lines like, Inglot, mehron, Ben Nye, Dinair, Anastasia, Coastal Scents, Makeup Forever, M.A.C, OCC, Stila, SMASHBOX, Crown Brushes, Niegels Beauty Emporium (can order online you would love them you'd get a million of discounts on tons of their products) plus getting an esthetician license I'm able to get discounts on a lot things in the industry hair products, makeup bags, hair tools, makeup tools, makeup seats etc... Oh I really wish you the best !!!! GOOD LUCK its so exciting to hear someone wanting to become a MUA !!!

School always helps BUT to be honest with you...I have asked at MAC stores and only like 1 out of 15 girls went to beauty school. I also know one VERY VERY successful makeup artist and she did not go to school. Personally I think that was is more important is perfecting the art of makeup. Practice A LOT. To begin with...you might have to do it for free....yes FREE just to get comfortable and to practice. Because doing eyeliner and fakelashes on someone alse will take practice weather you go to school or not. Call friends and family and do their makeup have them request a look or create a look that they will love. You can always volunteer at any school that has a theatre dep. you will gain experience and meet people with similar interests. If you know how to do makeup and you have a good portfolio I don't think anyone will care about your education. There are many people that went to beauty school but aren't as talented.

Practice a lot, sometime it is hard to be a recognized as makeup artist. I had 3 years education on makeup, but still hard to find a job. Now I am still keep looking for good opportunities. I sent my resume to everywhere, none of them reply me. I put my work in almost every makeup site. I am as freelancer now, but live in Japan is not easy to be a makeup artist. I won several contests here still hard for me to work as makeup artist. But I am not give up, because opportunities will always come. So I think you have to practice and try to know people, meet some photography, hair style, stylist, designer, models even your friends, ask them to be your model. Practice on yourself not always help to make you as great artist, you have to know different people faces, so you would understand what kind of makeup suit for them.
