i did word of mouth starting in april at my job and church and i keep getting work. i had the opp to go to a bridal expo to pass out business cards (unofficial vendor) but i got sick. plus this isnt my career so im not pressed to make a lot of money from it. i think the next step is networking with other MUA's
- Network with out MUAs
- Consider doing makeup tutorials/tips on Youtube
- Advertise on Craigslist
- Use social networking! Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Danielle's suggestion is good, expos (esp. wedding expos) are a great place to advertise
Danielle C. Stay away from Craigslist. I never had a positive experience from that site at all ( and I wasn't even looking for a MUA). Just full of cheap folks trying to get something pratically for free.
I give out business cards like its NOBODYs business. then after i did a few shoots tfcd to build my portfolio, i started getting more paid work, more girls at the shoots that i was working [for the same people, which goes to show that tf work CAN eventually get you paid]. i always leave cards out on the table while im working on the ladies. one of the girls i had worked with that day [at the shoot im talking about] had added me to facebook shortly after, and as it turns out, she's getting married in September.
I have to kinda disagree with the craigslist post though--i agree that many will want free work, at which point, i simply say no, or offer a decent deal. HOWEVER a restaurant chain found me through CL, posting about face/body painting as well as makeup artistry, and has been a regular client ever since.
A lot of my work has been word from mouth. Let friends know. I let my photog know that i was available to help him. Then i let the ladies add me to FB. etc etc. It'll happen =]
I give out Composite Cards and my business cards like crazy... It truly helps. Modelmayham is a great place to network. Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube ETC. but for me I started out asking Reception locations, florist locations, and making friends with DJ for weddings. Making friends in the industry helps. I worked the wedding industry first and from there it kind of moved up... asking and leaving my cards at photographer's place of business. I would talk to them asking if they promote me I'd promote them... it was great networking for me. Then moved onto working with just photographers and models. Then from photographers to some B movie sets. I say I agree with Shelley W. and Amanda K. stay away from craiglist. I heard horror stories of some of my MUA friends never ever getting paid. Word of mouth... once your have done one person they love your work they pass along your information to another. It is always slow in the beginning but give it time it'll pick up. Happy Networking Wishing Much Success !!!
I put my name out there just about everywhere I go. I ALWAYS have business cards on me. You never know who you bill bump into when you're not working and you don't want to be unprepared by not having one of your cards on you.
