Hello Beauties,

Have any of you ever dyed your hair by yourselves? Have you guys ended up with blotches of color? Or did you end up with some other disastrous consequences? Orrr was it a success??

I really want to dye my jet black hair a dark brown shade, without having to go to my hairdresser. Is this a recipe for disaster, or should I go ahead and do it?
Please let me know.

I didn't end up with blotches. But once, I failed to read the 'your color' 'what it'll end up as' instructions. My hair was blonde at the time, and the box was for a deep burgundy. However for the dark color I wanted, you had to already have dark hair. I didn't realize that. I ended up with pink hair! I ran to WalMart at midnight just to buy another box color of dark brown and colored over it. It turned out alright, but I was so horrified when I washed it out the first time!

Oh, I have so many! I'm presuming it's your first time dying?

Well, I think it might go like a dark orange... But at least you'll be dying over with a darkish colour. I'd also reccomend that IF you do bleach your hair at home to really pay attention to time. You normally see your hair lightening, which is pretty cool.

I don't think you'll get blotches, 'cos you don't have any colour build up. Also, I'd like to say that I only know these things from experience!

You could always go into like a hair dye supplier sort of thing and ask what they'd reccomend. They are normally so helpful!

Hope this helped!

Since you're going from a black to a dark brown, I don't think you messing up would be too noticeable than it would be with a more drastic change and you probably don't need to go to a hairdresser. I usually dye my dark brown hair to brown-black or black (mostly to get rid of grays) and have had no problems since its so close in color. I've also found that the foam dyes (like John Frieda's Precision Foam) are great for making sure the dye is evenly distributed so you're less likely to miss spots. :)

You will probably need to lighten your hair before dying it brown - that is more complicated. L'Oreal make a good lightner - be warned it's not great for your hair.

Oh thanks guys.
I won't bleach my hair though. I was hoping I could just use a foam dye and color my hair without bleach, since I really don't want my scalp to burn nor do I want to damage my hair.

Hmm.. how long have you had black hair? or is it your original hair color? Because I think that if you don't want to bleach it (which I don't recommend) you could just let your black color fade a little (use some hot oil-treatments, antidandruff shampoo etc) and then dye your hair? :)

It's my original hair color. I didn't know hot oil treatments fade your hair color. I've been doing them for years now, it never really affected my hair color.

Yes when i first colored my hair i used sun in and it turned my hair orange lol!! I used Loreal Hicolor for dark hair when i dyed mine lighter. You dont need to bleach before and they have a great color selection you can get it at sallys.

My roots have grown out and the bottom panel of my hair is black, so all I wanted to do was just color the lighter brown/blonde highlights part of my hair. I decided to use Loreal's Sublime Mousse in Pure Darkest Brown and it came out blotchy and some pieces of my highlighted hair is still visible. I wasn't too upset about it, I think it looks kind of cool but I'm going to have to fix it lol.

if you have virgin hair, you don't have to bleach it...you can just use a high lift colour or something...go see a stylist! it's worth the money. if you must do it at home though, i would recommend jennie a's advice...
