I have an amika flat iron! It's fantastic! But pretty much all flat irons these days are quite good. But I really love my amika one. They have a lot of really really cute designs and colors, and sizes and such. The brand itself is fantastic. Here's the link http://shop.loveamika.com/SearchResults.asp?searching=Y&sort=1&cat=20&show=12&page=1
Just going to your local mall there will probably be a few straightening iron booths set up, and you can see which ones you like best.
My tip for keeping them working well is after every time you use it is to take a Q-tip and put some alcohol on it, and rub off any brown marks on the iron part of it. That will keep it working really, really well. And also with Amika, if it stops working well, you can send it to them and they'll send you a replacement. :) Good luck!

Honestly, I think NuMe Style (numeonline.com) has the best flat irons.. they always have great deals for around $55 on Flat Irons on Living Social or Groupon or other daily deal sites. They do ship to Canada too.
I have the Fashionista Flat Iron and it litterally takes 10 seconds to heat up! My favorite iron, and honestly, I think it's way better than the CHI. I've read reviews on it being better than a GHD, Her Styler.. and some other brand names.

I have a Babyliss Titanium, and it heats up for me super quick. I also like how you can change how hot you want it to heat up to.

I use the Remington 2-inch flat iron and it heats up really fast. (You can purchase it for $30 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-S9520-Collection-Ceramic-Straightener/dp/B003V21WO2) Usually I just plug it in, turn it on, spray my hair with heat protectant, and it will make a little sound letting you know the iron is heated up.

GHD... I hated my chi because my hair would get caught in the plates. I don't have that prob with my GHD and it heats up in seconds, has an auto shut off and beeps to let you know it's ready to use. There's a nice long swivel cord for easier mobility and I've never been happier. One pass through, and your hair is straight!

I brought Remington's wet 2 dry flat iron, has been my go to hair straighten for about 5 years. Got it at rite aid and it was under 30 bucks. I recommend always using a hair product that protects against heat styling and deep conditioner when washing the hair. Double moisture protection, especially when flatting hair from wet to straight. I do highly suggest towel drying to the max before using.
